Art & Culture

Home to exclusive art collections, museums and theaters, Dallas has been recognized by New York magazine as a city for art lovers. Here, art is plentiful as Dallas boasts the largest urban arts district in the United States, spanning 19 city blocks.

With a diverse collection of more than 23,000 works spanning 5,000 years of history, the Dallas Museum of Art has impressive holdings of ancient American, African, Indonesian, and South Asian art; European and American paintings, sculptures and decorative arts; and American and international contemporary art.

The Nasher Sculpture Center showcases one of the world's foremost collections of privately owned modern and contemporary sculpture. Peruse a permanent exhibit of art and culture from China, India, Japan and Southwest Asia at The Crow Collection of Asian Art.

The AT&T Performing Arts Center features several incredible new venues, including the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House; Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre; Annette Strauss Artist Square; City Performance Hall (Opening 2012); and Sammons Park.

Over at the Southern Methodist University campus, the Meadows Museum houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside of Spain.

Beginning its roots as far back as 1886, Fair Park was put on the map thanks to the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. It also boasts the world's largest collection of art deco styled architecture. In fact, Fair Park is the only intact and unaltered pre-1950s World's Fair site remaining in the United States with an extraordinary collection of 1930s art and architecture. The 277-acre destination and its cultural, educational, and sports facilities play host to more than seven million annual visitors.

If music and theater are to your liking, Dallas is the place for you. For more than 50 years, The Dallas Opera has presented classic and contemporary operas to critical acclaim. On the lighter side, you may want to catch a Tony Award®-winning show from the Dallas Summer Musicals or something a little gayer at Uptown Players. The LGBT community is also proud to support two amazing choral groups, The Women's Chorus of Dallas and the most recorded men's chorus in the world, the Turtle Creek Chorale.

Wherever your interests lay in the area of visual and performing arts, or history and culture, Dallas is a destination with ample attractions for you.
